This painting is gorgeous. I love the top right corner. Is it just me, or is your work taking on a new life? I feel like there's so much emotion in your recent works.
ReplyDeleteI second Diana. This painting is just beautiful and may I say luminous.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I see you are using violet as shadows, is this something new?
ReplyDeleteThanks Diana. I certainly feel that I've grown over the last couple of years. a lot of whats happened in my painting is a reflection of my loosening grip on my concept of truth. For many years I was interested in a kind of social documentary in my work (albeit with some artistic licence and a lot of subjective editing). But more and more these days I'm interested in more painterly concerns, a little bit more narrative and metaphor, a little bit less fact.
ReplyDeleteWell I wouldnt call it Violet exactly but its definitely a warmer than usual purple. I use cad red and a variety of blues for my shadows and I think this time I used french ultramarine (which I rarely use for shadows) which is pushing it to a more warm (violetish) purple. Its definitely not my usual colour scheme.....but it does have a bucket in it to relate it to my current work!
ReplyDeleteThanks Gabs. Luminous eh? I think thats quite a compliment coming from you, painter of the pearlescent corn! I appreciate it. Do you get a sense that the storm is blowing away or gathering? I hope that it feels like there is a tension between hope and a looming disaster.
ReplyDeleteI'm just framing a dozen new pieces from Savannah and I'll post them next week after the open studios weekend.
Youre very welcome. Like Diana said, this piece has a lot of emotion in it. There is an eerie feel to it. And yes it feels to me like there is tension between light and dark. I find it interesting that because we read from left to right, one would think the storm is going away, but you have placed the light on the left and have shaded diagonally to the left indicating the direction of the storm and that it perhaps is passing by or about to begin. My gut tells me to take cover.
ReplyDeleteHow fascinating, the more I look at this piece, the more I find.
And yes! I did notice the bucket and I love your complimentary colors. A lot of dualities happening in this piece.
